two years on from his previous full-length, irishman-in-stuttgart marcus lambkin returns with what follows, his third album. recorded in his home studio, but mixed with juan maclean in new hampshire, it s a typically stylish and trippy set that methodically joins the dots between giorgio moroder, lcd soundsystem, italo-disco, german techno, balearic deep house, and intense chicagoan acid. lambkin has always been adept at making club music both left-of-centre and accessible, as if he secretly pines to make 80s synth-pop but is consistently drawn towards the dancefloor. this certainly explains the quantity and quality of the vocal numbers dotted throughout what follows.

john frusciantes foregrow doesnt sound like any acid test record, or any record, thatÕs come before it. after the unlikely alliance between the los angeles label and the iconoclastic venice, ca musician on trickfinger, all bets are off. this ones truly a passage through night. frusciantes using elements of john carpenters eternal scores, the drum programming dna of jungle and footwork, and yes, a roland tb-303, all slowed down to a crawl. foregrow is a lurching, lysergic beauty which offers glimpses of his platinum pop instincts, but only behind the veil of true experimentalism.

much-celebrated kompakt staple the field returns to the spotlight with new album the follower, his fifth full-length offering after from here we go sublime (kompakt rsd 02 cd 57), yesterday and today (kompakt 193 cd 72), looping state of mind (kompakt 241 cd 94) and cupids head (kompakt 290 cd 110). swedish soundsmith axel willner is well-known for his mastery when it comes to the allusive layering of loops, but it was with his last album cupids head that a newly-found, somewhat pressing snappishness started to replace the soft-hued sonics of his ambient-infused techno, imbued with a darker mood and stronger footing than before. a carefully gauged balance of stoic motorik and gloomy drones was key here - just as it is for the follower which goes even further in blurring the lines between concrete experimentation, body music and precisely laid-out arrangement, leading to one of the most rhythmically and texturally engaging listening experiences in willners catalogue.

things start off in spectacular fashion with the cute and upbeat spiritual encounter before settling into some funky and mysterious electro with bombay mix. hard copy is reminiscent of the early hi nrg vibes of bobby orlando or gino soccio but woolly hat and parallel universes are funky, fun loving 4/4 electro grooves that are more typical of the dmx sound. he saves the best for last though, with some darker excursions such as the high octane, telex sounding computational paradigm shift and the smack electro closer black poppy. with electro making an obvious comeback.

italian dj and producer manuel fogliata hasnÕt released a lot of records over the last ten years, but the few he has put out have always been worth tracking down. perhaps best known for his work alongside donato dozzy in creating the much sought-after aquaplano records at the tail end of the last decade, nuelÕs solo outings have been just as consistent and just as impressive. whether taking on metallic electro or syrupy, bass-heavy ambience, nuelÕs attention to detail and his keen ear for a groove has made each release something to treasure. nuelÕs only previous full-length, trance mutation (further records, 2011), was a masterpiece of minimal repetition.

the first years, from his first album in 1976 to his 7th in the middle of the 80s, were fuelled with an exemplary sense of creativity and a free-spirit vision. against everyoneÕs advice, cerrone was never reluctant to compose long and pure trance disco tracks, not exactly radio-friendly at the time, but which did incredibly well because they encapsulated the hedonism of the day and were far more than a trend. for instance, love in c minor and supernature have become unbeatable classics, featured regularly in the best pop, disco or dance selections. such a success would have burnt most of the othersÕ wings, whose career would have been ruined. at the beginning of the 80s, when he decided to unleash his creativity on stage, cerrone managed to rebound with you are the one studio album.

after retiring from the jamaican police force arthur duke reid established his treasure isle liquor store and sound system in pink lane kingston and was crowned the undisputed king of sound and blues in 1956, 57 and in 58. the duke then moved into record production and after relocating the store to 33 bond street, he then built a recording studio on top of his new premises in 1966. according to the musicians and singers the wooden construction of the treasure isle recording studio gave the music a distinctive warmth and richness and with resident engineer byron baron/smithy smith at the controls, the sound of a bond street recording was immediately recognisable.
